Etymology

pipa: according to Daudin, 1802, 'pipa' was the local Surinamese name for this frog species

Type material and localities

Syntypes: specimens figured by Seba, 1734. Type Locality: "Surinami".

Distribution

Native country records from Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Guyane Française, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela. Limits are: NORTH: Trinidad and Tobago: Nariva Swamp (10°25'N, 61°04'W) — SOUTH: Brasil: Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade (15°00'S, 59°57'W) — WEST: Ecuador: Shiripuno River (01°05'S, 77°03'W) — EAST: Brasil: Braganca (01°03'S, 46°46'W).
