Etymology

laevis: from Latin: l(a)evis = smooth (skin)

Type material and localities

Types: frog figured on p. 82, pl. 30, fig. 1 (Daudin, 1802), and noted to be in the MNHNP, but lost now. Type Locality: unknown.

Distribution

Country records from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Moçambique, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Zaïre, Zimbabwe. Limits are: NORTH: Malawi: Chelinda (bldg.), Nyika Plateau (10°35'S, 33°48'E) — SOUTH: South Africa: Perly Beach (bch) (34°40'S, 19°31'E) — WEST: Namibia: Swakopmund (22°41'S, 14°32'E) — EAST: Malawi: Lujeri (est) (16°00'S, 35°39'E).
